Kapiti Island is located about 8 km off the west coast of the lower North Island. It is approximately 10 km long and 2 km wide, and has an area of 19.65 square km. The Department of Conservation took over the island in 1987, and has since made significant improvements to the island's natural state, for example, eradicating rats.
