Stratford is the main town of the Stratford District in central Taranaki. The town is said to have been named because the local Patea River bears a resemblance to the River Avon in England. The Shakespeare theme was used to name more than 60 streets in the town after Shakespearian characters. Stratford also boasts New Zealand's only glockenspiel clocktower, which plays the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet three times a day.
