Patea is a town located 55 km west of Wanganui, on the banks of the Patea River. The town was initially founded as a garrison settlement during the New Zealand land wars of the 1860s. The town survived the closure of it's main employer (a freezing works) and went on to gain national fame as the home of entertainer Dalvanius Prime and the Patea Maori Club.
