Russell is situated 9km north of Paihia. Formerly known as Kororareka, this historic area includes New Zealand's oldest surviving church and the site of the country's first capital. Hone Heke famously cut down the flagstaff four times and burnt the town down in protest of European activities.
Russell was named after Lord John Russell, Secretary for the Colonies.
